In today's feature Bruce makes his last visit up to the 30th floor of the Jingguang Building overlooking the CBD of Beijing. Bruce is in the office of Arup, a leading UK firm of construction and engineering design. The company has contributed much to the success of the changing skyline of many Chinese cities, including Beijing. Bruce is talking with Associate Director Chas Pope.
Chas starts by explaining how building design and construction methods are responding to changing demographics. When T3 of Beijing Capital Airport was constructed 42,000 workers were involved. Today the vast pool of migrant workers is shrinking and builders are looking more at prefabricated units for assembly.
Chas feels in future there will be fewer mega projects in cities - simply is no more room and new projects will have to fit into smaller spaces.
Also, there is the question of livable cities - to create cities for people, where for example, they can walk or cycle to work and not have long commutes. Indeed sustainable cities are seen more as the future.
Finally Chas and Bruce discuss how there is much to learn from older, more denser areas of cities where there is much more action and human feeling on the streets.
