Beijing Design Week annually brings together creative minds from across China and from a wealth of nations worldwide. Australia is a country with a long history of working closely with China. This year several of its leading designers in the fields of fashion, architecture, design and much more came to Beijing to participate in the Capital’s growing festival of creativity, innovation and of course, design.

Hayley May Ward who coordinated Australia’s extensive programme talks enthusiastically about the citywide locations utilised for displays, workshops and events during BJDW 2015

Dashilar is a very popular historic district. Within a traditional courtyard on Tiaozhou Hutong 'Mad.Lab' illustrated the work of University of New South Wales students led by Dr Ian McArthur undertaken recently in Chongqing. They were collaborating with locally based 'Cqubed' and Priestman Architects in looking for contemporary responses to urban environments based around the burgeoning downtown Guanyinqiao district.

Close to Shichahai, Beijing Centre for the Arts has opened in a beautiful new courtyard next to the Jade River. Marc Newson the designer of the Apple Watch created a silver tea set as part of 'Jensen's Garden' set up there for BJDW.

Modern Indigo Mall at Jiuxianqiao has also been used this year and featured technological design from Steven Bai.

Hayley also mentions how the Design Week extended this year to the area around Baitasi where use has been made of the small local properties that characterise the lanes around the White Pagoda.
