Australian artist Denise Keele-Bedford often comes to China. As an artist of considerable reputation along with a deep knowledge of the Chinese scene she is regularly invited to artistic events across the country. Recently she was in the beautiful Taihang Mountains of Shanxi at a festival held in the small village of Xucun.
Denise explains how even in this small agricultural community there were modern communications including 'wi-fi'. It was so easy for her to communicate with her family back in Australia and even 'Bruce in Beijing'!
She talks of earlier days in China and of how people would hear the voices of their families on the telephone for the first time. It was not so long ago that phone calls had to go through an operator. Today smartphones put the world in people's hands!
Denise and Bruce talk of how Wechat has changed our lives - of how it is partly replacing emails and even normal phone calls. Wechat is a phenomenon which they both love and has become their main way of communicating. It is an excellent way of distributing photos and audio files, for example. However Denise feels there are times she has to switch off Wechat simply to have peace from the rest of the world, even for a few minutes!!
For Bruce it is always great chatting with Denise and sharing stories of everywhere from China to Australia and even Scotland!
