Tony Marrinan is 'Clusters GM' of Hilton Hotels around Beijing. He is based at the Hilton Beijing Capital Airport - a great location close to Terminal 3 with spectacular views of aircraft heading off worldwide.
Due to the proximity of the airport, the hotel building is low-rise creating a great sense of space.
In today's feature, Tony starts by talking of his earlier days in China when he was organising the setting up of the Intercontinental Resort Hotel at Yalong Bay near Sanya on Hainan. He and Bruce talk of the rapidly changing hotel scene on the island not only around Sanya but increasingly in Haikou. Every major hotel brand is represented on Hainan which is also increasingly developing as a conference and exhibition centre. Interestingly, although facilities are now world-leading few westerners know of 'China's Hawaii' with the result that most of the market is domestic.
Tony later spent a period in Hainan also helping the opening of an Intercontinental resort at Danang. Vietnam fascinated him with reminders of its French historic connections such as the architecture and French cuisine found in cities such as Hanoi.
Tony returned to China to become the Hilton Cluster GM and as he explains, loves working and living today here in Beijing.
