Professor Jane Duckett is International Dean for East Asia at The University of Glasgow. In today's feature she talks of the excellent quality and positive impressions of Ph.D students from China working in her department. She describes them as 'Ambassadors' for their country. Professor Duckett explains the range of Chinese related courses and research opportunities offered at Glasgow University. Some of this can include fieldwork in China and she tells of how some students go on to post-doctoral research.
In 2014 Professor Duckett became President of the British Association for Chinese studies. This organisation was originally founded in 1976 at the London School of Oriental and African Studies. It represents universities and other organizations who educate about China. With the growth of Chinese studies at school level Professor Duckett and the Association are looking for greater continuity between schools and higher education. Indeed, the role of the Association is expanding within the UK.
Glasgow University is putting great emphasis onto its growing links with China. This engagement has also been enforced by the establishment of a Confucius Institute right next to its main entrance gate.
