Malan village is located in Baoding city, Heibei Province. Mrs deng, who is in her 70s has spent 8 years with the students there since she retired.

Now she is doing rehearsal with the children’s band, which is composed by students of Malan village. The students even do the accompaniment by themselves; Second-hand violin, accordion and others are their instruments, and some members even hold tableware in hand to make do as musical instrument.

Now, you might ask why Deng Xiaolan picked out Malan village to spend her retirement life. It has to do with her father, Deng Tuo, late editor-in-chief of People’s Daily. During the 1940’s, Deng Tuo worked in the village for six years as it was the base of the Jin Cha Ji Daily, the predecessor of People’s daily.

8 years ago, Deng Xiaolan followed her father’s footstep and returned to Malan Village. The warm and harmonious atmosphere in the village made her stay year after year.

As soon as I settled down in the village, the local residents came to visit me and chat with me, since they all know who I am. They told me that they want to re-build the primary school, because the classrooms are too dangerous to stay in, the walls are supported by tree branches, and the roof was leaking in rainy days.

Deng Xiaolan helped them to re-furbish the school building. The first thing she did after the refurbishment was to open music lessons for the students.

The story of Deng Xiaolan and Malan village was shot into a documentary, "Malan's song", which becomes very popular online. This also allows more people to pay attention to Malan village.
