Leading whisky expert Jim Murray was in Beijing recently. He was participating in 'Whisky L' - introducing people how to appreciate and evaluate the different whiskies available today in China.
Although whisky is associated with Scotland, where it is called 'Scotch', varieties of the drink are produced worldwide - from Ireland to Japan! However countries produce different styles depending on climate and types of grain. Whisky is a distillation from grain mash such as corn, rye, barley and oats. In his book, 'Whisky Bible 2015' Jim covers this worldwide production.
He explains when assessing a whisky, each should be studied as an individual while looking for its good or not-so-good points. It does not matter where it comes from. Jim jokes that he is English yet has become an expert on Scotland's national drink. He also mentions the attendance at the event of 'George the Piper - a kilt wearing Beijinger!
Today in China there is a growing knowledge of whisky and people want to know more about the product - for example, the difference between a 'single malt' and a 'blend'.
